André Kruger began his military career as Platoon, Company and Unit Commander in the Infantry, and was involved in the initial semi-conventional operations into Southern Angola, such as Operations Reindeer and Protea. After serving at the SA Army College as Chief Instructor at the Army Staff Course, he became Staff Officer at SA Army Headquarters and participated in the transformation of the SADF in the 1990s, representing the SA Army in the establishment of the new Defence Secretariat in the SANDF. He was also a member of the SA Army General Staff that implemented the SA Army transformation programme. After retiring, he worked for Kentron (Denel). Once he relocated to Langebaan on the West Coast, he engaged in the tourism industry, spent 11 years in local government, and was a volunteer in the South African National Parks Honorary Rangers and the Saldanha Bay Water Quality Trust.
