Evans was born in Nelspruit in 1959 and grew up in Fairways, a Cape Town suburb for people classified Coloured under apartheid. He worked as a sound engineer at the Nico Malan Theatre, Sun City and the 3 Arts Theatre and for the band Juluka, before emigrating to Melbourne, Australia, in 1985.
