This book reconstructs the emergence of Sesotho from earlier languages, beginning with Proto-Bantu. It also examines the impact of contact with other languages, especially the Nguni group, Khoi and San groups, and later the languages of European origin. It addresses dialectal variation and languages derived from Sesotho such as Silozi, and traces the origins of writing systems used for Sesotho, explaining why different orthographic conventions have existed over time.

Ntšoeu Seepheephe is a senior lecturer in the Department of English at National University of Lesotho.
