Sam Shakong was born in the rural village of Phokwane in the Sekhukhune District. He left when he was 13 years old to attend boarding school in Pretoria, went into exile in 1963, and returned to South Africa in 1995. His memoir, I Want to See the Sun Rise, was published in 2019.
