In his memoir Colin Purkey describes growing up in apartheid South Africa in the 1960s, his experiences as a political activist in the 1970s, being arrested in November 1981 for delivering a letter, his 121 days in detention, and his continued involvement with the UDF and the JODAC Cultural Group after his release.

Colin Purkey lived in South Africa for the first 45 years of his life. He moved to the UK in 2000. Now retired, he lives in London.
