The village of Clarens is located on the western edge of the Maloti-Drakensberg and forms an area of overlap between arid Afromontane elements and moist Drakensberg alpine elements.

Dr Rodney Moffett is an honorary research fellow of the Department of Plant Sciences at the University of the Free State, and an associate of the Afromontane Research Unit at the Qwaqwa Campus. Before he retired in 2020 he was Professor of Botany at the Qwaqwa Campus while it was part of the University of the North. His publications include Sesotho Plant and Animal Names and Plants used by the Basotho (2010), Meriana ya Dimela tea Basotho/Basotho Medicinal Plants (2016) and A Scientific Bibliography of the Drakensberg, Maloti & Adjacent Lowlands (2020).
