Richard Dowden was Director of the Royal African Society from 2002 to 2017. He first went to Africa as a volunteer teacher in Uganda in 1972, and then again in 1983 as a journalist working for The Times. He became Africa Editor for the Independent in 1986 and in 1995 became Africa Editor for the Economist. He has also made three television documentaries on Africa, for the BBC and Channel 4.
