Conservationist Garth Owen-Smith on 27 years in the Kaokoveld, an arid region in north-west Namibia. In the late 1980s he and his partner Dr Margaret Jacobsohn founded IRDNC, Integrated Rural Development and Nature Conservation, now Namibia’s leading community conservation NGO. They were awarded the Goldman Environmental Prize in 1993 and received the Prince William Award for Conservation in Africa in 2015. Owen-Smith died in 2020.
