Scholar and activist Jack Simons (1907- 1995) lectured in African Studies at the University of Cape Town from 1937 until he was banned in 1965. He went into exile in England where, together with his wife, Ray Alexander, he published the book, "Class and Colour in South Africa, 1850-1950". After a short stay at the University of Manchester he spent many years as Professor at the University of Zambia. He returned to South Africa in 1990.
