Zenele clubs were founded in the Eastern Cape in the 1920s by mission-educated African women who sought to improve the lives of rural women by focusing on womens' resilience and leadership, the power of education and training for income-generation, and solidarity across class and ethnic divides.

Mango Tshabangu worked as a journalist for the Sunday Times and was a member of the management team of World Newspapers.
