Rosina Sedibane Modiba was born in 1958 in Atteridgeville. A track-and-field athlete at the height of apartheid, she became the first black South African woman athlete to win a gold medal in 1500m during the multi-racial provincial championships at Pilditch Stadium in Pretoria in March 1977. After a knee injury ended her athletic career she worked as a teacher. The apartheid laws made it impossible for Rosina to be awarded Springbok colours. In 2014, a year after her husband wrote a letter to Athletics South Africa appealing for Rosina to be recognized, she was finally awarded a green jacket.
