Jan Hendrik van der Westhuizen was born in Middelburg in Mpumalanga in 1982. He was a contributing food editor for ELLE magazine in South Africa and Paris before relocating to Nice to open his own restaurant, JAN, in 2013. The restaurant earned a Michelin star in 2016. The JAN Group opened JAN Franschhoek in 2022 and Le Bistrot de JAN next door to Restaurant JAN in Nice, France, in 2024. The restaurant Klein JAN at Tswalu Kalahari, a private game reserve owned by Nicky Oppenheimer, opened in 2021 and was a recipient of the La Liste Hidden Gem award in Paris. Jan Hendrik van der Westhuizen was named first in the African Food Network 100 Most Influential People in the African Food Industry 2023. His previous cookbooks include The French Affair; JAN, A Breath of French Air and Klein Jan Cookbook, a memoir from the tables from my childhood and my journey to the Kalahari.
