Professor Makgoba on his experience of South Africa’s transformation over 29 years since his return to the country in 1994 after working in the UK for 13 years.

Immunologist and physician Malegapuru Makgoba was appointed the first black Deputy Vice Chancellor at the University of the Witwatersrand in 1995. He left to join the South African Medical Research Council, where he served as President between 1999 and 2002 and was involved in developing South Africa’s AIDS strategy and the South African AIDS Vaccine Initiative. He joined the former University of Natal as its Vice-Chancellor in 2002, and oversaw its merger with the University of Durban-Westville into the University of KwaZulu-Natal. He is the author of Mokoko – The Makgoba Affair, about his experiences at Wits.
