In 2012 Major General Johan Jooste, retired from the South African National Defence Force, was controversially appointed Commanding Officer, Special Projects at SANParks, where he was responsible for anti-poaching strategy, planning and execution. He was given the mandate to convert the Kruger National Park’s ranger corps into a paramilitary force capable of fighting the poachers devastating the rhino population.

Johan Jooste continues is currently a programme manager for law enforcement and security with the Peace Parks Foundation.
