The letters, organised chronologically, begin in Pretoria Local Prison where Nelson Mandela was held following his 1962 trail, include letters from Robben Island Prison (May-June 1963; 1964-1982), Pollsmoor Prison (1982-1988) and Tygerberg Hospital (August-December 1988), and end with the letters he wrote from Victor Verster Prison where he was taken in 1988 and held until his release in February 1990. Includes facsimiles of some of the letters.
