David Goldblatt photographed and interviewed ex offenders at the places where they committed their crimes. Often they had not returned to the scene of crime since they began their prison sentence. Each portrait is accompanied by the ex offender's story in his or her own words. 

Also features Goldblatt’s portraits and interviews of subjects in England, made in collaboration with the community arts project Multistory.

South African photographer David Goldblatt was born in Randfontein in 1930 and started working as a photographer in 1963. He died in June 2018.

Brenda Goldblatt has worked as a television writer, producer, director and broadcaster. 

English writer Erwin James is a Guardian columnist and editor-in-chief of Inside Time, the national newspaper for people in prison. He became a writer in prison where he served 20 years of a life sentence. He is the author of A Life Inside - a prisoners notebook, The Home Stretch - from prison to parole and Redeemable - a memoir of darkness and hope.
