Taken from the preface:
In the 1950's, during my young days at our family home in Somerset, I well remember my father, Lynch Maydon, having regular talks with his eldest sister, Anne, about their father's life and activities in South Africa; these conversations covered business, politics, the Boer War and family affairs. Even at my young age, I became well aware that my grandfather had been an unusually active person who had succeeded in numerous undertakings in a developing country, Natal. a place very different from the England that I knew.
