The author writes in an 'explanation' that: 

The idea of collecting material for a record of this kind came from the queries to which it seems members of the public hope the Library will provide the answers. I soon found myself captivated by the spirit of the people who have inhabited this very special place, aided and abetted by my own boundless curiosity and delight in puzzles. I also soon discovered the existence of a number of Port Elizabeth "myths", which did not survive exposure to research.... I hope to convey some idea of what it has been like to live in Port Elizabeth over the years.
