Photographer Jürgen Schadeberg was born in Berlin in 1931. In 1950 he emigrated to South Africa and became chief photographer, picture editor and art director at Drum magazine. In 1964 he left South Africa and worked in London, the USA and Europe before returning to South Africa in 1985. He moved to Spain in 2007, where he died in 2020.
His books include The San of the Kalahari, The Fifties People of South Africa, Voices from Robben Island, Softown Blues, Voices from the Land and The Way I see It, a memoir.
