Herbert Isaac Ernest Dhlomo's play, Nongqawuse: The girl who killed to Save, was first published in 1935. His poem, "Valley of a Thousand Hills", was first published in 1941.

Playwright, short-story writer, essayist, poet and journalist H. I. E. Dhlomo was born in Edendale, Natal, in 1903. He was a co-founder of the Durban branch of the ANC Youth League. He died in Durban in 1956.
