Afrikaans poet, playwright and scholar Nicolaas Petrus van Wyk Louw (1906-1970) won the Hertzog Prize in three genres: poetry (three times), drama and critical prose and essay. He was Professor of Afrikaans at the Gemeentelike Universiteit in Amsterdam and Head of the Afrikaans/ Dutch Department at the University of the Witwatersrand.
