These essays first appeared in various publications in the 1980s. In 1991 the essays were collected and published under the current title. They have been reissued without revision.

This edition includes an interview with Njabulo Ndebele first published in Exchanges: South African writing in transition, edited by Duncan Brown and Bruno van Wyk (1991). The interview was provoked by Albie Sachs' paper, "Preparing Ourselves for Freedom". It also includes Njabulo Ndebele's NOMA award acceptance speech and a foreword by Michael Chapman.

Academic and writer Professor Njabulo Simakahle Ndebele is the former Vice-Chancellor and Principal of the University of Cape Town. He is currently Chancellor of the University of Johannesburg and Chairman of the Nelson Mandela Foundation. His books include Fools and Other Stories (1984 NOMA Award) and The Cry of Winnie Mandela, a novel.
