An unemployed drifter posing as a linguist joins an expedition to find an endangered group of gorillas and meets Annegret, a German zoologist. As the journey progresses he learns that Annegret, escaping from a traumatic past, decides she wants to not only find the gorillas but to stay and learn how to communicate with them.

Piet van Rooyen was born in 1953 in KwaZulu-Natal. His novels include Die Spoorsnyer (De Kat/Sanlam Prize and CNA Prize), Die Olifantjagters (M-Net Prize), By die brandende berg, Amatola, Voëlvry and Gif. He is Emeritus Professor at the University of Namibia and lives on his farm near the Gamsberg.
