The original performance of this play led to Ngugi wa Thiongo being detained for a year without trial by the Kenyan government. (See his memoir, Detained: a writer’s prison diary, published in 1981). The play attacks capitalism, religious hypocrisy, and corruption among the new economic elite of Kenya.

Ngugi wa Thiong’o was born in 1938, in Limuru, Kenya. His work includes novels, plays, short stories, memoirs and literary criticism. His novels include Weep Not, Child, The River Between, A Grain of Wheat, Petals of Blood, Devil on the Cross and The Perfect Nine: the epic of Gĩkũyũ and Mũmbi. His plays include The Black Hermit and The trial of Dedan Kimathi (Micere Githae Mugo).
