Performance poet, novelist and playwright Lesego Rampolokeng was born in 1965 in Soweto, and rose to prominence in the turbulent 1980s. Since 1990 he has published eight books of poetry, two plays and three novels. He has collaborated with visual artists, filmmakers, theatre and opera producers and musicians, in South Africa and internationally. Currently he is researching the literary and political writing of poet and black consciousness thinker Mafika Gwala.
