Olive Schreiner’s poignant novel From Man to Man was begun in 1873 but was never completed. It was first published posthumously by her husband in 1926.
In 2023 Nobel Prize winner J.M. Coetzee edited and adapted the novel, adding a fitting final chapter. It has been translated into Afrikaans by Antjie Krog.
Set in the 1860s, the story revolves around two sisters growing up on a farm in the Great Karoo. One sister remains in the British Cape Colony and finds a way to deal with her husband's infidelities. The other, raped at age 15 and hounded out of her insular white South African community, becomes a kept woman in London's East End.
