Explores the physical geography and biogeography of the Seekoei Valley in the upper Karoo. The encounter between its indigenous population of Later Stone Age hunter-gatherers and immigrant European trekboers (stockfarmers) migrating north will be explored in a future volume.

"There is exhaustive (but not exhausting) coverage of the geology, botany and animal life of the Valley. All of this is appropriate and necessary because the lives of hunter-gatherers and farmers were equally impacted by the presence of plant resources and pests." Lyn Wadley, University of the Witwatersrand

"From one of the most exhaustive field surveys anywhere in the world, the Seekoei Valley project has produced a detailed picture of the later Holocene hunter-gatherer past, of relations between hunter-gatherers and herders, and of the impact of European settler advance on local forager communities ... analysed here through a ground-breaking combination of textual and archaeological sources without parallel in southern Africa ... This will become a landmark reference source not only for archaeologists, but also for workers in allied disciplines." Peter Mitchell, University of Oxford

Garth Sampson is Program Professor in the Anthropology Department, Texas State University at San Marcos. He lives in Cape Town.

Dennis Neville is a freelance archaeologist and runs a NPO project in Johannesburg.
