The book, separated into four parts, takes readers on a visual, chronological journey through Ballen’s entire oeuvre, including both iconic images and previously unpublished photographs, as well as essays by the photographer explaining his background and artistic development.

Roger Ballen was born in New York in 1950 and has lived and worked in South Africa since 1982. He was one of the artists that represented South Africa at the Venice Biennale Arte 2022 in Italy. His previous books include Boyhood (1979), Platteland (1994), Outland (2001), Boarding House (2009), Shadow Chamber (2005), I Fink U Freeky (2013, with Die Antwoord), Asylum of the Birds (2014), The Theatre of Apparitions (2016) and Roger the Rat (2020).
