Mbu Maloni was born in 1993 in Masizakhe township in Graaf Reinet, Eastern Cape. He wrote this memoir when he was in Grade 11 at Maiphumelele High School on Cape Town. In it he describes growing up in poverty, sleeping on the streets, the search for dignity in a world of alcohol, drugs and crime, the older brother who took care of him as a toddler, and the dream of education that kept him going.
Lutz van Dijk was born in 1955 in Berlin and lives in Cape Town, where he is a co-founder of HOKISA (Homes for Kids in South Africa). A teacher by profession, his books include A History of Africa, Stronger than the Storm: Romeo and Jabulile and Themba - A boy called Hope.
