In her play Chariklia Martalas adapts Dante to the South African context.

Dante meets South African poet Mashudu in her Dark Wood and guides her through Inferno and Purgatory, where she meets various South Africans including Jan van Riebeeck, HF Verwoerd and John Dube, and is forced to reckon with the reality of South Africa's past and present.

Chariklia Martalas is a PhD candidate at the University of Edinburgh’s College of Art in Cultural Heritage.
