A commemorative volume celebrating the life and work of academic, poet and playwright Adam Small (1936-2016). Small was awarded the Hertzog Prize in 2012 for his contribution to the drama genre. Known for his use of the Kaaps dialect, and a member of the Sestigers, his poetry collections include Kitaar my kruis (1961), Sê Sjibbolet (1963), Kanna hy kô hystoe (1965), Oos Wes Tuis Bes Distrik Ses (1973, with photographs by Chris Jansen) and Klawerjas (2013). His plays include Black Bronze Beautiful (1975), Joanie Galant-hulle (1978), Krismis van Map Jacobs (1983) and Maria, moeder van God, 'n passiespel (2015). In the early 1970s he joined the Black Consciousness Movement. In 1973, while Head of the Department of Philosophy at the University of the Western Cape (UWC), he was not permitted to become a member of Senate because he was not classified White, and later that year resigned in solidarity with students expelled for protesting against apartheid. He returned to UWC in 1983 as Head of the Department of Social Work and was appointed Senior Professor in 1993, before retiring in 1997.
