19,5 x 27,5cm, steel engraving, Paris, 1683

Engraved by Abraham Peyrounin.

Map of Africa.

Sanson produced over 300 maps, and raised France from a negligible to a premier position in geographical status. The maps of Sanson did not compare in sumptuousness with their Dutch counterparts, but geographically they were frequently superior, and justly esteemed for the clarity and delicacy of their engraving. Nicolas Sanson had three sons, Nicolas who predeceased him, Guillaume who died in 1703 and Adrian in 1708.
