Kobus Meiring was a member of the National Party (later the New National Party) and Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs (1986 - 1989). In his memoir he offers his view on South Africa's emergence from the isolation of the apartheid years and the diplomatic turning points that he feels shaped the country's future. He also discusses the challenges of reform and the divisions within the Afrikaner community at that time.

Kobus Meiring (b. 1936) was the last Administrator of the Cape Province (1989 - 1994) and served as an MEC in the Western Cape government (1994 - 1999). Now retired, he lives in Sea Point.
