British-Ghanaian architect Sir David Adjaye was born in 1966 in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. The son of a Ghanaian diplomat, he lived in Tanzania, Egypt, Yemen and Lebanon, before moving to Britain at the age of nine. Adjaye was awarded the 2021 RIBA royal gold medal.

Writer, editor and journalist Spencer Bailey on more than thirty of the architect's projects, including Museum of Contemporary Art Denver; Moscow School of Management, SKOLKOVO; Francis A. Gregory Neighbourhood Library in Washington; Aïshti Foundation in Beirut; Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture; Winter Park Library in Florida, and Ruby City in Texas.

Spencer Bailey is co-founder of the media company, The Slowdown, host of the Time Sensitive podcast, and author of the book In Memory Of: Designing contemporary memorials. From 2013-2018 he was editor-in-chief of Surface magazine. He lives in New York City.
