A memoir by retired naval engineer and shipbuilder Zbyszek Miszczak about his youth under communist rule in Gdańsk, Poland, participating in the shipyard strike that gave birth to the Solidarity movement, dodging a subsequent army call-up, and becoming a political refugee. In 1981 he went into exile, first to a refugee camp in Austria and then to South Africa, where he worked for the South African Navy in Simonstown.

"Not only mesmerising, but his account of adjusting to the South African way of life has me in stitches." Jan Glazewski
