Gatsha Buthelezi: Chief with a double agenda was first published in London in 1988 but was made unavailable in South Africa because of litigation threats by Mangosuthu Buthelezi.

This edition includes a new introduction by Mandla J. Radebe, Associate Professor for Strategic Communication and Director of the Centre for Data and Digital Communications at the University of Johannesburg.

Mzala Nkumalo's study of Chief Gatsha Buthelezi, critically examines Buthelezi's role during the apartheid era, particularly his position as both an opponent of apartheid and Chief Minister of the KwaZulu Bantustan (1976–94). Buthelezi was also leader of the Inkatha Freedom Party (1975–2019). What did he stand for, and whose side was he on?

Mzala Nxumalo worked for many years in the ANC’s Research Department in Lusaka, Zambia. He died in London in 1991 at the age of thirty-five.
