A novella set in Tsolo, a rural village in the Eastern Cape. Alizwa is forced into a polygamous marriage to Chief Daliwonga at the age of seventeen so that she can bear the male heir to the throne. When she gives birth to a girl, the baby is taken away from her because it is taboo for a childless chief's first-born to be female.
