Mncedisi Mdingi was born and raised in Guguletu, a township outside Cape Town. In response to the inequality, injustice and racial oppression prevalent in apartheid South Africa, he turned to a life of crime, which grew to includ bank robberies and cash-in-transit heists. In 1997, after several incarcerations, he was sentenced to 42 years and six months in a maximum security prison. After serving 19 years of this sentence, during which his life changed through his relationship with his future wife and his conversion to Christianity, he was released on parole in 2016. His parole will end in 2033.
