Social historian, academic and intellectual Bill Freund (1944-2020) was born in Chicago, the only child of Jewish Austrian refugees. He taught in Nigeria and Tanzania before moving to South Africa in 1985. He was Professor Emeritus of Economic History at the University of KwaZulu-Natal.
