Painter and architect Clément Sénèque (1896-1930) was born in Mauritius. His family moved to Durban in 1900, where he lived for the rest of his life, apart from a few years spent in Paris (1921-1925). He died from pneumonia at the age of 33.

Chartered account and collector Nigel Hughes' collection of Sénèque's paintings covers the period 1917 to 1929. He is the author of The Paintings of the Bay of Natal: A selection of works dating from 1945 to 1982 (2001), Views in Colonial Natal: A select catalogue raisonné of the southern African paintings of Cathcart William Methvwn (1849-1925) (2005) and Durban in the 1920s and 1930s (2021).
