This second edition of Eeeben Barlow's guide and textbook for African ground forces and their staffs includes two new forewords, expanded chapters and new appendices that cover the evolving nature of conflict and war on the continent. The author draws on his experiences serving numerous African governments as a politico-military strategist, division commander, division adviser, battalion commander and special operations commander.

"Surely the seminal work on the subject. Incredibly detailed and thoroughly researched by a man who has both the empirical and theoretical knowledge to tackle a very complicated subject ... Anybody looking to fight a war in Africa need look no further for guidance." Hannes Weasels, author of A Handful of Hard Men

"Eeben Barlow's book Composite Warfare is a must read for anyone interested in African warfare - practitioners, strategists and academics ... He uses his unique knowledge and experience from working with African armed forces for more than forty years and presents a text- and handbook for African soldiers and military planners in general ... The book also constitutes an important and needed critic to the often donor-driven military transformation ad reform process that trains and sets African armies up for failure ... a valuable and much needed African voice in the vast western dominated literature of war and military affairs." Thomas Mandrup, Associate Professor, Security Institute for Governance and Leadership in Africa, Stellenbosch University, and the Institute for mIlitary History and War Studies, Royal Danish Defence College
