Retief taught dogma and ethics in Malawi, biblical studies at the University of the Western Cape, and served congregations in Swellendam and Bellville (1982-1989). He later left the church, taught in the Department of Journalism at Stellenbosch University (2000-2001) and was National Press Ombudsman (2009-2019). He is the author of Media Ethics, an introduction to responsible journalism, and lives on the West Coast.
