Memoir by Gillian Slovo, the daughter of South African anti-apartheid activists Joe Slovo and Ruth First.

"Gillian Slovo has written a brave book, as unsparing of herself as it is of her parents ... a moving testimony to a childhood of absences, raids, alarms and mysteries" Christopher Hope, Independent

"Compelling ... far from being an exercise in self-pity, it becomes both a study in child psychology and an open-eyed tribute to brave, difficult, and often combative parents" Barbara Trapido, Spectator

Gillan Slovo was born in South Africa in 1952 and went into exile in England in 1964, where she has spent all her adult life. She is the author of 11 novels, including Red Dust, which has been made into a feature film.
