An investigation into how and why the Voortrekker Monument in Pretoria was created. The 92-metre frieze is a pictorial narrative of the Boer ‘Great Trek’ into the hinterland of South Africa (1835-52).

Elizabeth Rankin is Professor Emeritus of Art History at the University of Auckland, and previously Professor of the History of Art and Dean of Arts at the University of the Witwatersrand.

Rolf Michael Schneider is Professor Emeritus of Classical Archaeology at the Ludwig Maximilians University, Munich, Honorary Professor in the School of Languages and Literatures at the University of Cape Town, and Honorary Research Fellow of the African Studies Centre of London University.
