Bernard Lategan completed his doctoral studies in the Netherlands, served as Professor of New Testament at the University of the Western Cape (1969-1977), and lectured at several South African and European Universities in Ancient languages, linguistics, literature and theology. From 1978 to 1991, Lategan was Professor of Biblical Studies at Stellenbosch University. Before his retirement in 2009, Lategan was founder and first director of the Stellenbosch Institute for Advanced Study. He was awarded an honorary Doctorate in Philosophy from Stellenbsch University in 2009.
