Cynthia Stimpel was appointed Group Treasurer of South African Airways (SAA) in 2006. In 2016 she heard that an irregular deal of R256 million between BNP Capital and SAA had been signed, against her strict orders, and immediately sent a whistleblowing message to National Treasury in an attempt to stop the deal. As a result she lost her job and had to face SAA board chairperson Dudu Myeni in court and testify against her at the Zondo Commission.
