Ngũgĩ wa Thiong'o was born in Limuru, Kenya, in 1938. His work includes novels, plays, short stories, memoirs and literary criticism. His novels include Weep Not, Child, A Grain of Wheat, Petals of Blood, Devil on the Cross and The Perfect Nine: the epic of Gĩkũyũ and Mũmbi. His plays include The Black Hermit and The trial of Dedan Kimathi (with Micere Githae Mugo). He is currently Distinguished Professor of English and Comparative Literature at the University of California, Irvine.
