An historical overview of the Iziko South African Museum, southern Africa’s oldest conventional museum. Established in 1825, the museum has collected, researched, exhibited, conserved and preserved various specimens, objects and artworks in the fields of natural history, social history and arts.
The contributors reflect on how the museum has contributed to the understanding and preservation of heritage in the country and abroad, and discuss how, over time, conventional museum categories have been subjected to revision, as well as how museum spaces can be reimagined.

Bongani Ndhlovu is a UWC CHR research associate, Executive Director: Core Functions for Museums of South Africa, and was course co-convenor for the UCT Michaelis School of Fine Art-Iziko Honours Curatorship Course. He has 28 years of experience in the heritage sector.
