Jan Hendrik van der Westhuizen created the restaurant Klein JAN at Tswalu Kalahari, a private game reserve owned by Nicki Oppenheimer. The restaurant opened in 2021 and was a recipient of the La Liste Hidden Gem award in Paris.
South African born chef Jan Hendrik van der Westhuizen was born in Middelburg in Mpumalanga in 1982. In 2009, while working on a private yacht as a chef, he wrote his first cookbook, The French Affair, which won an award at the International Gourmand book awards. In 2013 he opened Restaurant JAN in Nice, France. The restaurant received a Michelin star in 2016. In 2015 he published his second cookbook, JAN, A Breath of French Air. The JAN Group opened JAN Franschhoek in 2022 and Le Bistrot de JAN next door to Restaurant JAN in Nice, France, in 2024.
