John Carlin was the South Africa correspondent of London's Independent newspaper from 1989–1995. Here he covers the years from Nelson Mandela's release from prison in 1990 to his accession to the presidency in 1994, and the role he played in South Africa's victory at the 1995 Rugby World Cup. Carlin's book Playing the Enemy: Nelson Mandela and the game that made a nation, is the basis for Clint Eastwood's 2009 film Invictus.
